The history of the Sporthotel Romantic Plaza begins in 1956 ...

when Celso Maffei decides to buy a piece of land from the Habsburg Imperial Family, and in particular by the Oesterreichers. The Emperor loved Madonna di Campiglio since the late 19th Century, the same years when Princess Sissi spent here her happiest moments.

Not only the Austro-Hungarian upper class, but also the Italian Nobility begins to visit Campiglio for summer holidays. Grandpa Celso choses to build a little guest house on that small area where goats came to water, together with some deers.

A few years later, in 1960, thanks to the innovation brought by the construction of the Spinale and Grostè skilifts, winter tourism takes off.

The Maffei family, the owner all along, work with passion and resilience, turning into a reference point for Campiglio holidays. In 1984 Piero Maffei, Celso’s only male son, and his wife Lucia, take up the first big renovation giving birth to the Grazia & Plaza Hotel.

In the new millennium, Campiglio becomes famous worldwide and Celso’s niece, Francesca Maffei, continues a tradition of hospitality handed down from generation to generation. Years later, with the commitment and the enthusiasm of those who truly love their land and their home, begins the second restructuring, ended in 2010 Sporthotel Romantic Plaza.
